Police launched a large-scale operation in the city center of Mannheim on Monday following reports that a car had plowed into a crowd of people.
Authorities described the situation as “life-threatening” and urged residents to stay away from the central Paradeplatz, where the incident occurred around midday.
According to local media, a black SUV was seen speeding into a group of pedestrians near a carnival market. The Mannheimer Morgen newspaper reported that at least one person was killed, though officials have not yet confirmed casualties.
A police spokesperson, Stefan Wilhelm, told N-TV that officers were responding to the unfolding incident, and an emergency alert was issued through the Katwarn app to warn residents to avoid the area.
The incident comes just weeks after a similar attack in Munich, where two people were killed in a car ramming.
Authorities are continuing to investigate. More details to follow.
