Greece is poised for a stellar tourism season in 2025, with Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni expressing confidence in the country’s ability to attract an unprecedented number of international visitors.
Speaking at the ITB Berlin exhibition, one of the world’s premier tourism trade shows, Kefalogianni shared that early signs from the global travel market are overwhelmingly positive.
“We are not just looking at 2025 as a strong year for Greece. The major players in the industry are viewing Greece as a long-term investment,” she stated in a conversation with both Greek and international media. Kefalogianni emphasised that Greece’s tourism strategy aims to not only capitalise on peak seasons but also establish the country as a resilient and attractive destination for years to come.
In line with this vision, the Tourism Ministry has prioritized sustainability, aiming to preserve the country’s natural beauty while supporting local communities and the national economy. “Our focus is on creating a balanced tourism model that promotes long-term growth and sustainability,” Kefalogianni said.
Challenges and Opportunities: Extending the Season and Promoting New Destinations
While the outlook for Greece’s tourism sector is bright, the Minister acknowledged key challenges that lie ahead, including the extension of the tourism season and the development of new destinations and experiences. Greece is committed to spreading its tourism benefits across more regions, which includes promoting emerging sectors such as nature tourism, wellness, diving, and mountaineering.
Kefalogianni also stressed the importance of spreading visitor arrivals more evenly throughout the year to alleviate the pressure on peak-season destinations, a key area of focus for Greece’s largest tourism market, Germany. The German demand for season extension aligns perfectly with Greece’s strategy of attracting year-round visitors.
Greece’s Resilience Amid Global Uncertainty
Tourism, of course, is vulnerable to geopolitical tensions and global crises. However, Kefalogianni assured the public that Greece has proven its resilience time and again in the face of international challenges. “Greece remains a safe, welcoming, and reliable destination,” she remarked, adding that the country’s ability to respond effectively to crises continues to enhance its reputation on the global stage.
With an eye toward 2025 and beyond, the Minister’s message was clear: “We want the world to know that Greece is open for business, safe for travelers, and ready to deliver unforgettable experiences.”
Sustainability Remains a Top Priority, Especially in Germany
Sustainability is an increasingly important concern for the German market, which is Greece’s largest source of international visitors. Kefalogianni highlighted that German tour operators are particularly enthusiastic about extending the tourism season in Greece, a sentiment that complements Greece’s strategic priorities.
“We are focusing on attracting tourists throughout the year while promoting lesser-known destinations,” said the Minister, noting that Germany’s growing interest in sustainable travel trends, such as eco-tourism and wellness retreats, aligns with Greece’s push for responsible tourism.
Reassurance Over Santorini’s Seismic Activity
Addressing recent concerns about seismic activity in Santorini, Kefalogianni reassured potential visitors that the situation is being closely monitored. “Santorini will continue to welcome visitors as usual,” she confirmed, stressing that the island’s safety protocols are always in place to ensure a safe visit. The Minister further stated that recent scientific data shows a decline in seismic activity, with daily life on the island returning to normal.
Greece’s Strong Presence at ITB Berlin 2025
At the ITB Berlin 2025 expo, Greece’s presence was unmistakable. The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) pavilion showcased the country’s diverse tourism offerings, from well-known destinations to emerging hidden gems. The exhibition, one of the largest in history with 5,800 exhibitors from over 170 countries, serves as a platform for Greece to reinforce its commitment to sustainability and high-quality tourism experiences.
ITB Berlin, which opened on March 5 and runs until March 6, has attracted a global audience, cementing its place as a key event for the international travel industry. With Greece standing out as one of the top destinations for 2025, the country’s tourism outlook has never been brighter.
