Unknown individuals have been impersonating the Mayor of Ioannina, Thomas Begkas, to fraudulently place large food orders at local catering establishments. Posing as the mayor’s representatives or associates, these individuals have contacted businesses by phone, requesting substantial souvlaki orders in his name.
According to reports, the fraudulent activity does not stop at food orders. In some cases, the callers have also requested the purchase of prepaid cards, allegedly to “secure their next meal.” The Municipality of Ioannina has issued a formal statement confirming that neither the mayor nor any of his associates are involved in these actions.
Authorities are urging local business owners to remain vigilant against such fraudulent calls. They advise that any suspicious requests—particularly those involving prepaid card purchases—should be met with caution. Business owners are encouraged to refrain from fulfilling the orders and to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities.

The Municipality of Ioannina, situated in the Epirus region of Greece, is known for its rich cultural heritage, historic castle walls, and its proximity to Lake Pamvotis. Thomas Begkas, who took office as mayor in 2023, has been actively engaged in local governance but has no involvement in placing personal food orders or requesting prepaid cards.
Local authorities are investigating the scam and have reminded businesses to verify any unusual requests before proceeding with orders. The public is advised to remain alert to similar fraudulent schemes.
