In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter) late Sunday, the ministry expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life, emphasising the urgent need to end the ongoing violence in Ukraine.

“Profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of life caused by Russian missile attacks in the Ukrainian city of Sumy this Palm Sunday. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wish a full recovery to those injured. This violence must come to an end. An immediate ceasefire is urgently needed,” the statement read.

The Greek government has consistently supported Ukraine’s sovereignty and called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, which has now entered its third year. The timing of the attack—during a significant religious holiday for Orthodox Christians—added to the shock and sorrow expressed by officials and citizens alike.

The city of Sumy, located near Ukraine’s northeastern border with Russia, has faced repeated shelling since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. Sunday’s strikes reportedly resulted in multiple casualties and widespread destruction.

Greece joins other European Union member states in condemning the escalation and urging renewed diplomatic efforts to halt the war.
