Honorary Consul General of Greece in Queensland Expresses Regret Over Australia’s Abstention on UNESCO Greek Language Day Vote

George Mastrocostas

23 April 2025 – Brisbane, Australia

The Honorary Consul General of Greece in Queensland, Mr. George Dimitri Mastrocostas, has formally expressed disappointment over Australia’s decision to abstain from voting on the UNESCO proposal to recognize February 9 as the International Day of the Greek Language.

The proposal—put forward by a record 87 co-sponsoring nations—aims to honour the Greek language's enduring influence, historical significance, and global contribution. Despite passing unanimously at UNESCO, Australia was among a small group of countries that did not support the initiative.

“This decision is deeply disheartening,” Mr. Mastrocostas stated. “Greek is not only foundational to global civilisation, but it also forms an essential part of Australia’s multicultural fabric. By choosing not to support the proposal, Australia risks sending the wrong message to the hundreds of thousands of Greek Australians who have enriched this country in countless ways.”

Since 1987, Greek has been officially recognised as one of Australia’s priority languages, reflecting the language’s cultural and educational significance across the nation. The Greek Australian community continues to play a vital role in shaping Australia’s economic, civic, and cultural life.

In an official letter addressed to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Penny Wong MP, and copied to the Prime Minister and other senior officials, Mr. Mastrocostas urged the government to re-evaluate such positions. He called for a renewed commitment to inclusion, cultural recognition, and respect for the diverse communities that make up the Australian identity.

“This is not just about a language—it’s about heritage, identity, and recognition,” he added. “Australia missed a significant opportunity to affirm its solidarity with the Greek community, both here and worldwide.”
