Renowned tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou has sparked debate in the tennis world with a bold suggestion to improve the sport. Mouratoglou argues that the dominance of aces and serve winners is hurting the game and has proposed a simple fix: limiting players to just one serve per point.
“The high number of aces and serve winners is detrimental to tennis,” Mouratoglou said. “We want more rallies and less of these quick points—boom, serve, winner, ace, missed return. An occasional ace is fine, but not too many.”
The coach believes that reducing serves from two to one would encourage longer rallies, shift the focus toward strategy and athleticism, and make matches more entertaining for fans. Critics, however, may argue that the serve is a core skill in tennis, and such a change could diminish its importance or slow the game excessively.
Mouratoglou’s comments have reignited discussions about the evolution of tennis, with opinions divided on whether the sport needs a shake-up or if its current balance is part of its charm. No official response from tennis governing bodies has been made, but the proposal is sure to fuel conversations among players, coaches, and fans alike.
