Greek Heritage Night at Fenway Park Honours “The Golden Greek” Harry Agganis and Celebrates Hellenism

More than 3,000 Greek Americans gathered at Boston’s iconic Fenway Park on Tuesday evening for the annual Greek Heritage Night hosted by the Alpha Omega Council in partnership with the Boston Red Sox.

Now in its 8th year, the event has become a cherished tradition, uniting the Greek diaspora of New England to celebrate Hellenic pride and culture — all against the backdrop of America’s favourite pastime.

This year’s celebration was held in honour of Harry Agganis, the legendary Red Sox first baseman and beloved son of Greek immigrants, widely known as “The Golden Greek.” In a moving tribute during the pre-game ceremony, the United States Marine Corps posthumously inducted Agganis into the Marines Sports Hall of Fame, recognising his service from 1950 to 1951 before he joined the Red Sox in 1953. He becomes the first Greek-American and only the second Red Sox player (after Ted Williams) to receive this prestigious honor. The award was presented to Agganis’ nephew and grandnephew, Mike and Greg Agganis, during an emotional moment on the field.

Alpha Omega Council Chairperson Christos Chrisafides remarked, “Greek Heritage Night has grown into one of the most powerful expressions of unity and pride in the Greek-American community. It’s more than a game — it’s a celebration of who we are, where we come from, and what we can accomplish together.”

The event also paid tribute to distinguished guests and organizations, including The Consul General of Greece in Boston, Hon. Symeon Tegos, the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate (with National Commander Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis in attendance), and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston Camp (MBC). Proceeds from the night will benefit MBC’s new Gym & Field House Project at the St. Methodios Faith & Heritage Center in Contoocook, New Hampshire.

The evening’s festivities began with traditional Greek dance performances by troupes such as the Metropolis of Boston Dance Group, Sons & Daughters of Alexander the Great, and the Paradosi Dancers of Brockton.

Rising talents and community members were featured throughout the pre-game ceremony: Paige Davis, an award-winning singer, performed the U.S. National Anthem; Alex Sideridis, a student at Saint John’s Prep, threw the ceremonial first pitch; and Erietta Tegos, daughter of the Greek Consul General, gave the iconic “Play Ball!” call. The colors of Greece, the United States, Massachusetts, and the Alpha Omega Council were proudly presented by members of the Metropolis of Boston Dance Group.
