Greece's Parliament on Wednesday night approved the agreement between Greece and Italy, on the delimitation of their respective maritime zones.
It is recalled in June, following a meeting between Foreign Ministers Nikos Dendias and Luigi di Mayo, Athens and Rome agreed on demarcating an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The demarcation of maritime zones between Greece and Italy has been pending since 1977 and changes the data regarding the demarcation of maritime zones with Albania.
The Greek-Italian agreement was voted 'for' by the ND, SYRIZA and KINAL MPs, while the KKE, Hellenic Solution and Mera25 voted 'against'.
Earlier, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis clarified the strong will of Greece to defend its national sovereignty with all the legal weapons of international law.
He also announced that the government will soon submit a bill extending Greece’s territorial waters in the Ionian Sea from 6 to 12 nautical miles.
"Nothing is preventing our country from extending its territorial waters to 12 miles. The settlement of maritime zones with neighbouring countries restores international law and allows the use of common resources. Conditions are re-establishing a regime of legitimacy in the region," Mitsotakis added.
Speaking of the accords between Italy and Egypt, he also said “they have major historical and political significance.”
The agreement with Egypt will be ratified during Thursday's plenary session.
