Kaisariani Photographs: From eBay Auction to Athens' Hands – How Greece Acquired the 262 Authentic Images of the 200 Executions

On February 20, 2026, Greece’s Ministry of Culture signed a preliminary agreement with Belgian collector Tim de Craene to acquire 262 authentic photographs from the May 1, 1944, execution of 200 Greek resistance fighters (mostly communists) at the Kaisariani shooting range. Part of the archive of German Wehrmacht officer Hermann Heuer (or Hoyer), the images were withdrawn from eBay after authenticity was confirmed via expert macroscopic examination. The collector expressed satisfaction, with final ratification expected in the coming weeks.
