Yiannis Loverdos Concludes Historic Visit to Greek Communities in Australia and New Zealand

Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Loverdos completed a landmark visit to Australia and New Zealand, the first by a Greek deputy minister since 2017. During his tour, he met with Greek community leaders, church authorities, academics, and local officials, focusing on improving consular services, supporting Greek language education, and strengthening ties with diaspora communities in cities including Brisbane, Hobart, and Sydney.

The Macquarie Greek Studies Foundation is made up of individuals who share a common goal of securing the viability of the Greek language and culture in Australia. We are all working really hard to expand our support base and, as a consequence, to ensure that the Modern Greek Studies Program at Macquarie University is provided today and in the future for the benefit of future generations of students.

The Macquarie Greek Studies Foundation is hosting a Town Hall event on December 16, 2024, to discuss the future of the Modern Greek Studies program at Macquarie University, following the university’s decision to discontinue the program. The event will reflect on the Foundation’s efforts to retain the program and outline next steps in supporting Greek language, culture, and history education.
