Greece came in second place in a survey carried out by DiscoverCars.com on the ultimate Easter destination. The company used data from Instagram to create a list of the 20 most popular countries to visit during Easter.
Aleksandrs Buraks, Head of Development at DiscoverCars.com, said, “Greece has so many rich traditions for both Easter and the coming of spring. We enjoyed exploring this piece and reading about all the different ways people in Greece celebrate the changing seasons as well as the Orthodox Holy Week. One of the customs that impressed us the most was the beautiful processions on Good Friday, where the Epitaph will be carried down the street followed by a crowd singing hymns. Something we like about the list is that spring in each of these countries will be a different experience depending on the time of year. If you were to visit Australia or New Zealand in the spring, you would travel from September to November, meaning you might see two seasons of spring in the same year!”
Greek Orthodox Easter is a very important period in the Greek calendar and is world-famous for its celebration. One of the most special parts is the Holy Saturday service, held in the churches on Saturday night.
Just before midnight, all the lights will go out, and the priest will light the waiting church candles. It's beautiful to see! Afterwards, fireworks will be set off in many cities and towns to celebrate the Resurrection.
Families will gather on Easter Sunday for a traditional feast. Roast lamb, a dish perfected by generations of Greeks, will likely be served.
According to the survey, the top 5 Easter destinations were the UK, which was tagged 3,655 times on Instagram. Greece was tagged 2,927 times with Easter-related hashtags.
In third place was Australia, with 2,793 highlights. Canada ranked fourth, being tagged 1,394 times. In fifth place was Ireland, with 662 highlights.
DiscoverCars.com also compared the order in which countries were ranked for Easter celebrations on Instagram in 2023 with this year's results. Ict is the second year in a row that Greece is in 2nd place.
