Greece’s capital city has once again been nominated for the “European Best Destination 2020″ title, with Athens being selected for its long history, cultural heritage attractions, gastronomy, and nightlife.

The competition is being held for the 11th consecutive year by the Brussels-based organisation European Best Destinations (EBD), in collaboration with Europe’s leading tourist agencies, which aims to promote culture and tourism.

“With equal measures of grunge and grace, Athens merges the past with the present in the most slender way! A city of paradoxes and great contrasts, in the country that first invented the courtesy and generosity towards people who are far from their home, hospitality (xenia),” the EBD website says.

The Greek capital is competing with 19 popular European cities: Menorca, Spain; Bydgoszcz, Poland; Sibiu, Romania; Vienna Austria; Prague, Czech Republic; Cascais, Portugal; Namur, Belgium; Reykjavic, Iceland; Rochefort Ocean, France; Cork, Ireland; Heviz, Hungary; Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Berlin, Germany; Tbilisi, Georgia; Rijeka, Croatia; Madrid, Spain; Paris, France; Rome, Italy; and Colmar, France.

“The title will offer significant benefits to the winner including its promotion through major international media around the world. Furthermore, it will enhance the destination’s image in Europe,” the Municipality of Athens said in an announcement.

You can vote here for Athens until February 5.
