Scam Alert? Mykonos Prices Under Fire Again Already This Season

Price scam alert Mykonos hotel

A recent Reddit post titled "Eclipse Hotel (Mykonos) - SCAM ALERT" has ignited a heated discussion surrounding alleged price scams and misleading tactics by a Mykonos restaurant. This comes a year after the famed ‘DK Oyster– Gate” which ended in a separate Mykonos restaurant, DK Oyster, being fined over €30,000 after charging two American tourists, €600 for two drinks and a portion of crab legs.

The latest claim, as detailed in the Reddit post authored by a discontented user, details their alleged encounter with exorbitant prices and questionable practices by staff at the Eclipse Seaside Restaurant, located on the roof top of Mykonos Kosmoplaz Beach Resort Hotel, Platys Gialos.

According to the now-unhappy customer, while searching for a spot on Platis Gialos beach when they were approached by a waiter from the hotel's restaurant. The waiter allegedly extended an offer to the family to utilise the hotel's sun lounges on the condition that they purchased two drinks.

The writer claims that as the family became comfortable,  the waiter reportedly persistently pushed them to place orders. When asked about the prices, the waiter apparently evaded the question, claiming that the drinks menu needed to be fetched but reassured them that the prices were cheap.

The user asserts that they felt coerced into ordering milkshakes for their children, despite not initially intending to do so. After an hour, they decided to order calamari, which was advertised at €19 on the menu and supposedly included a side salad and bread, as confirmed by the waiter. However, when the bill arrived, they were shocked to find the calamari priced at €148, with additional charges for the milkshakes, salad, and bread amounting to €38, €28, and €14.50, respectively.

Upon expressing their dissatisfaction with the inflated prices, the Reddit user claims to have been met with hostility from both the waiter and the cashier. The cashier allegedly tore off the receipt's top section, which contained the vital transaction details such as the hotel's name, address, and the date of the transaction. Furthermore, no signature was obtained before charging the user's credit card a significant sum of €360.80.

Some Twitter users however, were quick to rush to the defence of the popular Greek island tourist destination.

“Another anti-Hellenic posted a receipt from a hotel restaurant in Mykonos on Reddit. Why do they hate our county so much?” tweeted one user.

“28 euros per person, yes what is your problem?” he continued. “It was made with philotimo, you don’t even know what this is. It’s cheap!!!”

Another user posted a photo of a recent receipt from Munich’s Havana Club, to show that the prices as equally exorbitant as those in Mykonos, tweeting, “That’s nonsense, in Munich and other tourist destinations there are equally expensive drinks. Mykonos is a tourist resort of the rich. See photo Havana Club 0.7lt 2500 euros. I also have a photo of a wine for 30,000 euros if you are not convinced.”

“Bread. Salad, Squid. 1 beer. 1 mojito. And 2 milkshakes,” came the simple response from another Tweeter. “If he gave my table such an order I would swim away.”

According to Tripadvisor the restaurant has since been temporarily closed.
