Falasarna Beach and Balos Lagoon Secure Spots on TripAdvisor's Best Beaches in the World 2023 List

According to TripAdvisor’s Travellers ‘ Choice awards, two picturesque locations in Greece, Falasarna Beach and Balos Lagoon, have been recognised among the top 25 Best Beaches in the World for 2023. Falasarna Beach earned the 20th spot on the esteemed list, nestled just behind Nungwi Beach in Zanzibar Island, Tanzania. Balos Lagoon secured the final place on the list, following the breathtaking Magens Bay in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

TripAdvisor’s Best of the Best awards are only granted to a few select destinations based on the reviews and opinions of travellers over a 12-month period. With less than 1% of its 8 million listings receiving this recognition, the award signifies the highest level of excellence in travel.

Falasarna Beach, named after the ancient port of Phalasarna, is situated at the western tip of Crete. Located approximately 60 kilometres from Chania town and 17 kilometres west of Kissamos, this stunning beach is accompanied by the remnants of the Greco-Roman city of Phalasarna. Visitors can explore the ancient ruins, including imposing fortifications and a closed harbour connected to the sea by two artificial channels. Falasarna Beach itself boasts pristine sands, turquoise waters, and opportunities for water sports, making it a perfect destination for relaxation and recreation. Don’t forget to witness the awe-inspiring sunset, considered one of the most beautiful on Crete.

Balos Lagoon, known for its exotic landscapes and breathtaking sunsets, stands as one of the most spectacular beaches on the island. Although reaching the lagoon can be challenging, it remains a popular choice, especially during peak season. Adventurous travellers can choose from three different routes: a scenic hike from Kaliviani, a drive or bike ride on the dirt road from Kaliviani to the Gramvousa Reserve, or a ferry or boat cruise from Kissamos.

The lagoon is a part of the Natura 2000 protected reserve and is home to rare flora and fauna, including Eleonora falcons, shags, cormorants, and protected species such as the monk seal and loggerhead sea turtle. With its pink sands, crystal-clear waters, and stunning vistas, Balos Lagoon offers a captivating beach experience, further enhanced by the magnificent views at sunset.

Both Falasarna Beach and Balos Lagoon showcase Greece’s natural beauty and rich history, making them must-visit destinations for travellers seeking unforgettable beach experiences.
