As the Olympic Torch Relay winds its way from the historic grounds of Ancient Olympia to the vibrant streets of Athens, a unique fusion of athleticism and artistry is captivating spectators along the route. The "Olympic Cypher," a series of breakdance performances, is adding a contemporary flair to the traditional journey of the Olympic Flame.
Conceived, choreographed, and artistically curated by Ilias Chatzigeorgiou, The Olympic Cypher is a celebration of breakdancing, a new sport set to debut at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Presented by the Embassy of France and the French Institute of Greece in collaboration with Flux Laboratory, the performances aim to honour the inclusion of breakdancing in the Olympic lineup.
From April 16th to 26th, the Cypher will traverse through key cities, mirroring the path of the Olympic Torch Relay. Stops include Ancient Olympia, Piraeus, Chania, Volos, Ioannina, and culminating in Athens at the Panathenaic Stadium for the Lighting and Delivery Ceremony of the Olympic Flame.
In each city, Chatzigeorgiou and his team of dancers create a dynamic dance circle, blending elements of battle, performance, and improvisation. The dancers navigate space and time, accompanied by original electronic music crafted by musician and DJ Alexis Falantas.
The performances not only showcase the athleticism and creativity of the dancers but also serve as a platform for local breakdancers to join in, representing their communities on stage. Through solos, duets, and group routines, the Cypher embodies themes of unity, camaraderie, victory, and struggle, echoing the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
Speaking on the significance of breakdancing's inclusion in the Olympics, Chatzigeorgiou notes, "Our new heroes come from the streets, our new champions will be dancers." The Olympic Cypher not only celebrates the art form but also invites the audience to participate in this collective moment of celebration and expression.
The French Institute of Greece, in its longstanding commitment to cultural exchange, emphasises the importance of integrating art and sport. "With The Olympic Cypher, the French Embassy, the French Institute of Greece, and their partners will offer the Greek public an exceptional moment in the torch relay, allowing everyone to join in the dance," remarks a representative.
