Terrigal Dancer Kyra Johnson Leaps from Local Stages to LA Spotlight
Kyra Johnson, a 22-year-old dancer from Terrigal, has achieved what many can only dream of—she’s signed with Bloc LA, one of the most prestigious talent agencies in Los Angeles, and has secured a position as a lead dancer under the renowned choreographer Brian Friedman. After years of dedication and countless hours perfecting her craft, Kyra is now poised to perform alongside some of the world’s biggest stars.
Kyra’s journey began at the age of two when her mother introduced her to dance. “As soon as I could walk, Mum was like, ‘Let’s get her into something with music,’ because it was my favourite thing to do,” Kyra recalls. Her passion quickly blossomed, and she honed her skills in a wide range of styles, including contemporary, lyrical, jazz, musical theatre, and hip hop—the latter becoming her specialty.
“I’ve always been versatile,” she shares. “Hip hop is my main style and what I teach, but I’ve worked across all styles throughout the years. I started teaching at 16, choreographing for the younger dancers, and from there, everything just elevated.”
Taking the Leap to LA
Despite her success in Australia, Kyra realised that to make dance a sustainable career, she needed to take her talents overseas. “Australia has some opportunities, but to really make it as a professional dancer, I knew I had to go to LA,” she explains.
The defining moment came during the “Flip the Switch” convention in Los Angeles, a gruelling four-day dance event featuring back-to-back workshops with renowned choreographers. “You dance for 12 hours a day for four days straight. Agencies attend to scout new talent, and by the end of it, Bloc LA reached out to me. I couldn’t believe it,” Kyra says.
She vividly recalls the moment she received Bloc’s email. “I was on the phone to Mum, screaming, ‘Bloc Agency wants to meet with me tomorrow!’ It felt surreal. Two days later, I flew back home to Australia, but that email changed everything.”
In addition to signing with Bloc LA, Kyra’s career reached new heights when Brian Friedman, a legendary choreographer known for working with the biggest names in music, selected her as one of his lead dancers. “Being one of Brian’s lead dancers is a dream. He’s so well-known and works with nearly everyone in the industry. Having a deal memo with him means years of ongoing work—it’s beyond what I could’ve imagined,” she says.
Not dancing was never an option
Kyra’s track record is stacked with impressive achievements. She has performed internationally in Mexico, China, and the US, winning the prestigious Dancechella Solo Championship and securing placements at Hip Hop International. Locally, she choreographed for Terrigal High School’s winning performance at the School Eisteddford and danced as a backup for Havana Brown.
When asked about her advice for aspiring dancers, Kyra emphasises perseverance and authenticity. “Stay true to yourself. I always tell my students, ‘No one is like you, and that’s your strength.’ The industry is tough—you’ll hear so many ‘no’s’ before you get a ‘yes,’ but it’s those moments that push you to work harder and achieve more.”
The Future is Bright
Kyra’s ultimate goal is to choreograph for international tours and continue inspiring others through her passion. “Maybe one day I’ll be a Brian Friedman,” she laughs. “For now, I’m just focused on giving it my all and enjoying the journey.”
From teaching young dancers in Terrigal to performing on the world stage, Kyra Johnson is living proof that with passion, hard work, and resilience, dreams really can come true.
“I’ve chased my dreams to LA and won’t stop until they become a reality,” she says with determination.
