A profound sense of mourning has enveloped Volos following the tragic death of a newlywed couple in a horrific traffic accident.
The victims, a 31-year-old woman and her 32-year-old husband, were instantly killed when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a farm vehicle driven by an 82-year-old man.
The fatal accident occurred on Sunday afternoon, just outside the village of Lechonia, near Malaki, on the road leading to Volos. Witnesses report that the motorcycle, traveling at high speed towards Volos, crashed into a rural vehicle that had pulled out from a side road, allegedly failing to yield the right of way. Both riders, who were wearing helmets, were violently thrown approximately 12 metres from the impact site, resulting in their deaths.
The tragic news quickly rippled through the community, leaving the residents of Volos in shock. In a heartbreaking twist, the father of the 32-year-old victim passed away shortly after hearing of his daughter’s death, adding to the already overwhelming grief that has gripped the family.
Emergency services were quickly alerted, with an ambulance arriving on the scene alongside a doctor, only to confirm the tragic deaths of the couple. The bodies were later transferred to Volos Hospital, where heart-wrenching scenes unfolded, with family members collapsing in disbelief.
The Traffic Police Department of Volos has launched a preliminary investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident, as the road was congested due to the return traffic to Volos.
The untimely deaths of the young couple have left an indelible mark on the local community, which continues to mourn the loss of lives taken far too soon.
