A 60-year-old man has been sentenced to eight months in prison by the Volos Single-Member Misdemeanor Court for sexually harassing two underage female athletes last Saturday.
The court ruled that he will serve three months of his sentence behind bars. The incident occurred at the indoor gymnasium of the EAK sports facility in Volos, where the two girls, aged 16 and 17, were attacked after finishing their training session and heading to the locker rooms.
The trial was held behind closed doors due to the victims’ minor status. Despite being on suspension, the man continued to frequent the EAK premises. He was found guilty of serially violating the sexual dignity of the athletes from the Olympiacos Volos women’s team, both in completed acts and attempts. The court recognised diminished responsibility due to his psychiatric issues.
According to the ruling, he will serve three months in prison out of the eight-month sentence. The lawyer representing the girls’ families, Mr. Mourtzinos, praised the courage of the victims, stating: “The girls’ mental health has been shaken. Their parents are supporting them to regain their emotional balance. We hope this conviction will lead to restrictive measures preventing this man from approaching the children’s sports facilities again. Bravo to the girls for finding the strength to face this situation and report it to their parents.”
