The Lysicrates Play Competition Returns: Celebrate Australian Talent and Democracy

Get ready for an exciting event that blends ancient Greek tradition with modern Australian creativity! The eighth Lysicrates Play Competition is back, and you’re invited to be part of the action. With three exceptional finalists vying for the top prize, it’s an afternoon of entertainment, culture, and community you won’t want to miss.

The Lysicrates Play Competition, held annually, is a platform for showcasing some of Australia’s most promising playwrights. This year, out of 64 entries, three outstanding finalists have emerged, each with a unique and compelling story to tell. And here’s the twist – the audience gets to decide the winner! Just like in ancient Athens, where plays were chosen democratically by the entire audience, your vote counts towards crowning the champion.

Picture this: a glorious summer afternoon at the Conservatorium, surrounded by fellow enthusiasts of the arts. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the finalists’ works come to life through staged readings, performed by professional actors and directors. After the performances, the excitement continues as you stroll down to the Lysicrates Monument in the Botanic Gardens. There, amidst music and festivities, the winner of the $15,000 prize will be announced.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. After the winner is revealed, you’re invited to mingle with the artists, fellow audience members, and maybe even dance the evening away. It’s an opportunity to celebrate creativity, support Australian talent, and perhaps witness the birth of the next Australian classic.

This year’s finalists are Daley Rangi with ‘The Mountain Remembers,’ Jacob Sgouros with ‘Ripple,’ and Keziah Warner with ‘Nightcaps.’ Each playwright brings a unique perspective and style to the competition, promising an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
