2,000-Year-Old Greek Lecture Hall Unearthed in Italy

Archaeologists uncovered a 2,000-year-old Greek lecture hall in Agrigento, Sicily, a major ancient Greek colony founded in 580 B.C. Dating to the second century B.C., this unique facility within a gymnasium complex is the earliest known of its kind in the Western Mediterranean, predating a similar structure in Pergamon, Turkey, by centuries. Featuring a theater for 200 people, it highlights ancient Greece’s blend of physical and intellectual pursuits.

The Municipality of Athens has secured €2,011,280 from the Green Fund to restore and enhance Filopappos Hill and the Western Hills of the Acropolis. Mayor Haris Doukas said the funds will support infrastructure, greenery, and safety upgrades, addressing long-standing issues. Led by GREEN ATHENS, the project includes pruning historic olive trees, flood prevention, and planting 100 new shrubs, with plans for 500 more trees by 2025.
