Greece’s Culture Ministry has announced that it will allow pets to enter more than 120 archaeological sites across the country, easing the current regulations that only allow guide dogs for disabled visitors.
However, some of the busiest and most popular archaeological sites, such as the Acropolis of Athens and Ancient Olympia, will still prohibit pets due to their high visitor traffic.
To enter the sites, pets must be kept on a leash no longer than one meter, carried in a pet carrier or pouch, and owners must provide a health certificate and accessories to clean up their pet’s waste. Larger dogs must wear a muzzle. Additionally, cages will be available at over 110 sites where owners can park their pets during their visit.
It is expected that this move will align the country’s accessibility framework with the standards of other European nations where pet entry is already allowed.
Greece’s tourism industry is a significant contributor to the country’s economy, generating billions of euros in revenue each year.
