Portokali Gliko- Oranges in Syrup Recipe

Portokali Gliko  (Πορτοκάλι γλυκό is a toothsome orange sweet, kept in a jar.

Orangey, colourful, sweet and syrupy, this is the perfect way to preserve the essence of this delicious fruit all year round.

We recommend serving this ‘spoon sweet’ with a glass of cold water and vanilla ice cream.

  • 3 cups of water
  • 3 cups of sugar
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
Steps to make Portokali Gliko
  1. Lightly rub the surface of oranges over a grater to remove some of the bitterness of the fruit.

  4. Thread a needle with strong cotton or double thread. Roll each wedge into a tight curl. String curls close together on a thread. About 12 per thread. Tie it into a necklace.
  5. Place necklaces in a saucepan of boiling water and boil uncovered for 20 minutes.
  6. Rinse necklaces and cool in cold water.
  7. Refill the saucepan with water brings it to a boil and add necklaces. Boil for 20 minutes. Drain and rinse in cold water.
  8. Dissolve sugar in water over heat and add necklaces. Bring to boil.
  9. Lower heat and simmer uncovered for approximately 1 hour.
  10. Add lemon juice. Cook for another 30 mins, or until syrup is thick and set.
  11. Allow cooling before cutting thread and placing curls in the jar and covering with syrup.
  12. Cover when completely cold.
  13. Serve the portokali gliko with a glass of water.
